Mobetta Loretta: Music

The Kneeling Nun

(Mobetta Loretta)
October 1, 2009
Music & Lyrics by Loretta Chacon
"Kneeling Nun" is written through the voice of my great aunt, Virginia Chacon. She was the powerful woman who stood by her husband, Juan Chacon, who was the leader of the union. The subject of the song is somewhat of a prayer or spiritual journey, finding goodness and strength within ourselves.

The actual "kneeling nun" is a monolith rock formation where the mining first began to take place in Santa Rita, New Mexico. She is a symbolic representation of the female spirit as legend is told.

I’m going down to the kneeling nun.
She gives me strength to carry on.
In New Mexico copper mines.
Her spirit remains a force in the earth.

Sometimes I let you down.
I feel broken and torn.
My body is weary.
My spirit is worn.

I believe in the goodness,
Of man and womankind.
Just look at the baby,
Right here by my side.

Chorus
So, I must look to the kneeling nun.
Her spirit is strong.
She lifts me up.
She is the rock in the storm.

Repeat Chorus

If we only hold on,
In spite of the storm.
We will find strength,
Within our hearts.
